FootprintLab serves data concerning many environmental effects of economic activity. These belong to different impact categories, a term drawn from the field of industrial ecology. An impact category collects multiple physical material streams into a single metric of effect on a specific environmental system with a unified unit of measurement. For example, emissions of methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide all have can be aggregated into a a single impact category ‘climate change’ with the unit of kg CO2-equivalent (often written kgCO2eq).
In our impact factor database, these categories are written in snake_case .
